Fun Run Wednesday May 24th

Fun Run
Wednesday, May 24th is the Fun Run! All students will be able to participate whether or not they brought in pledges, so make sure that your child wears comfortable clothing and shoes that they can move in.   Make sure that your child brings a water bottle and puts some sunscreen on in the morning.  5th graders will run after they eat lunch, at 10:30.   If you are able to make a donation or pledge, it is not too late to do so. You can still sign up online or send in the envelope. We appreciate any help you can give to the school to support our kids.  It’s going to be a lot of fun!

Testing
We have a lot of testing these last weeks. Please make sure that your child gets some good sleep each night.   If you can send in a pack of mint gum, we can still use it.Homework
With testing going on we have modified our class schedule and homework.  Homework this week has been to get the personal narrative books finished and illustrated. Please check in on your child and remind them to do that work at home.
They can also review their math skills and practice problems they are unsure of. They will have several math tests coming up including SBAC testing,  a placement test for next year, and our end of year assessment.
I’ve also sent home some lyrics that they need to practice for Promotion Day. There is a guideline sheet which I sent home a hard copy of, and also posted online on DOJO yesterday.
Colonial Day Costumes
Thank you families for washing and returning Colonial Day borrowed costumes.  I am still waiting on just a few students to return their costumes.  Please send back all borrowed Colonial Day costumes, washed and ready for next year.  If you have extra pieces that you would like to add to our collection, we are very grateful to you and yo uwill know that the pieces will be used well by the students coming after you.
Fifth Grade Barbecue
I am also still waiting on just a few of the Barbecue letters. Please send those back with what you will be able to send for the 5th grade barbecue. We hope parents will join us for the celebration and social time. Come a little early to help.

Open House and Colonial Day

Thank you to all the families that came to Open House!  It was so fun to see you all dancing and trying out some of our activities.

5th Grade Barbecue and Activities
Students brought home a letter with some of our 5th grade activities and events. We will need your help and some donations. Please check what you would be able to send for our hot dog barbecue and please let us know if you can also attend some of the activities–come play in the 5th grade versus the Parent/Teacher games, etc.

Fun Run
I’ve also sent home the letter for the Nye Fun Run which is raising money for the school. Students can participate by getting pledges, but they can also participate by registering online and sending email pledge requests to family and friends. The Fun Run is May 24th.

Colonial Day
Students also got to pick out some costumes to borrow for Colonial Day on Thursday, May 18th. They have taken them home and should put together their outfits to wear tomorrow. Students got hats, vests, skirts, blouses, dresses to use. They may still need other items such as britches, tops or aprons. Please make sure that your child takes care of the costume pieces that they borrow. These should be washed and returned after Colonial Day.

Thank You for a Lovely Teacher Week!

Thank you for a lovely Teacher Appreciation Week!  I loved all the letters, cards, gifts, and flowers, and the wonderful lunch last week.  Thank you all for your support and help!

Language Arts
We are now reading Lemonade War together and having a lot of fun.  Spend some time with your child and ask them about what’s happening in the story.  Have them read a passage to you and talk about the book.  If anyone has a lemon tree with lemons on it, we would love to make some lemonade in class.  Please Dojo me if you are able to contribute some lemons or sugar.

Writer’s Workshop
I am hoping students can get another personal story published.  Please remind your child to work on it at home to add more details and finish their project.  Students are using google docs to type in their story, but they can also keep their writing on a jump drive and work on a word file.  Also, please help your child to find some pictures that they might be able to add to their book when they publish.  It is always fun to add pictures of family and events if you have them.

Math
We have finished Topic 16 geometric figures.  We will have a test on the unit on Wednesday.  Please remember to check your child’s tests results and math work online.

SBAC Testing
Next Monday we officially start SBAC testing.  We would like some mint gum donations so our students can chew only while taking their tests.  If you are able to help us, it would be greatly appreciated.

Colonial Day
Colonial Day is Thursday, May 18th.  Students have been given a letter with some suggestions for costumes to wear on our Colonial Day.  We also have a few things here that students can borrow, then wash and return back to school.

Please read over the letter that was sent home last week for ideas and suggestions.  You can also look for Colonial Costume ideas online and go through your closets to put an outfit together.  Students will be expected to come to school dressed.  We will also have our Open House from 5:30-6:30 that evening where students and parents can participate in a big colonial dance.

Scholastic Book Club
Our last book order will be placed by May 12th.  This will give us enough time to get the books in time before school is out.  Students got a special coupon which will give them one free book up to $5.00 if they order  at least $5.00 worth of books.  Please take a look online at the catalogs.  Remember to redeem the coupon online.  You will need to enter the code when you order.  If you are sending a book order back to school, please make sure that you include the coupon so I can enter it for you.

Order  online. If this is your first time ordering online, you will need to enter our class code:  QJ3YR
