It’s the Year of the Rooster 4714! Happy New Year!

Chinese New Year
Gung Hay Fatt Choy!  Thank you families who sent some goodies for us to try, and parents who came to help.  We tried some new foods and learned how to use chopsticks.  We learned about different cultural traditions and compared them to other cultural celebrations and practices.  It is always so interesting to see how we are alike and different in our mixed American traditions.

Here are some other places students can find out more:
Click here to learn some Mandarin phrases and greetings http://www.chinahighlights.com/travelguide/festivals/chinese-new-year-greetings.htm
You can also learn how to write the “fook” symbol, which means blessing and good fortune near the bottom of this page.

Here is a page with some foods people eat during the New Year and what the food symbolizes. http://www.chinahighlights.com/travelguide/chinese-food/chinese-new-year-food.htm

Chinese New Year
January 28th hosts the Chinese New Year of the Chicken, so we would like to celebrate Chinese New Year’s  on Monday, January 30th.  Remind your child to wear red on Monday.  Please send some goodies that we can share in the classroom in the afternoon.  We will need tangerines, noodles dishes, and other yummy Asian foods that students can try, plates, and disposable chopsticks so that everyone can try using them, drinks and cup.  Please talk to your child about what they may bring and we will make a list in class.

Pearson Math
We are finishing our unit Topic 7 on adding and subtracting fractions.  Check in with your child to make sure that they have completed their online work for the unit.  Check the results on their Quick Checks and Practice Buddy.  Go over the problems that they got wrong and help them to review so they will be ready for the end of unit assessment.  We will take the test on Wednesday if everything goes on schedule.

ST Math
Your child can work on ST Math at home.  It is a fun and engaging way for them to improve their math skills and work on math concepts.  The more time they spend on ST Math, the stronger their math understanding becomes.  Please encourage your child to put in some time on ST Math at home.

Language Arts
Students are starting to synthesize their research on their environment project to write their research paper.  You can help your child at home by asking them about their topic and discussing what they are working on and what they have learned.

Dress for Success March
We celebrate Martin Luther King  Jr. life and accomplishments this Monday with a holiday.  On Tuesday, January 17th, our school will hold a Dressed for Success March to remind us all of our ability to affect our world in a positive way.  Remember to come to school on Tuesday “dressed for success”  and show your school spirit.

Pearson Math
We have finished Topic 6 in PearsonRealize.  Parents and students can go online to see the assessment results.  Please take some time to review the tests, and go back over problems that were missed to find mistakes and correct them.

We are now starting Topic 7 which focuses on adding and subtracting equivalent fractions.  Students will have finished Topic 2 at the end of this week.  We are trying to flip the lesson, so students are reading the lesson pages on their own and doing the homework lessons, before we do the practice section together in class.  This seems to be helpful for more students because they can come back to me with questions and we can address misconceptions after they have thought about the math concepts ahead of time.  Again, I can’t overstate how helpful it is for students to use the online material and to try to work a little ahead of the lessons.  Please encourage your child to keep up with their math work and online material.

Environments Project
Students are working on their Environment Project.  They are coming up with research questions to guide their study.  Please check in with your child and ask them what they are focusing on.  You can help them by taking them to the library to find books, read newspaper articles and magazines on their topic, and find information online.  Click on the Environments Page above or here to find out more.

Chuck E Cheese Fundraiser
On Wednesday, January 18th, 12:30-9:00  Nye will host a Chuck E Cheese fundraiser.  Invite all your friends and family to come have some pizza, play some games, and have a great time.  A flyer with coupons has been sent home.  Feel free to make copies.  Chuck E Cheese will donate 15% of the proceeds back to our school.

Welcome back!  It is so nice to see everyone again.

Pearson Math
This week we are starting back in math working with division with decimals.  Students are working on Topic Lesson 6.7 and will continue through lesson 6.9 this week. Then we will do our unit assessment.  Please help your child by going over division steps and talk through the word problems in the homework to help them think through the process and strengthen number sense.

Many students are still behind on their online work from before our break.  Please encourage your child to start the year getting all their work done on time.

Setting Goals
Today we talked about setting goals and taking small steps to measure our progress towards their goals.  I’ve shared the Dojo site with parents who are on Class Dojo.  Take a look at it and discuss with your child, to help them be more successful in accomplishing their goals.

Language Arts
Our class will be starting a research unit about some of the environmental factor affecting our world.  Students will be asked to research on line as well as to find books, articles, newspapers, etc. on their topic and focus.  Discussion at home can help your child think more deeply about their topic.  Encourage your child’s curiosity by taking them to the library and talking about things you watch together on the news.  This should be a fun and informative unit for them.

Free Performance in Old Town on January 6th
This Friday if you are looking for something fun for the family to do, come see me performing in Old Town at the Fiesta Del Reyes stage (that is the outdoor stage next to the Casa del Reyes restaurant) at 6:30pm and 7:30pm.  The show is called “Gold, Frankinscense and Myrh” and is about the Mexican tradition of the celebrating the Day of the Three Kings, which happens to be on January 6th this year.  It is a lovely setting, and there is free Mexican hot chocolate, as well has hot tamales and buenuelos for sale for a couple dollars.  A great event for the whole family.
