Thanksgiving Week

It was so nice to talk to everyone who came to parent conferences.  Thank you all for being interested in your child’s education and helping your child to be more successful in school.

Thanksgiving Week, November 21-25
Next week is Thanksgiving.  Students will have a whole week off from school.  Please remind your child that they can take advantage of this time to catch up on work that needs to be done, to get ahead if they are able, to practice math facts, type up their stories so we can publish.  There are so many wonderful resources for them to work and play on:  STMath, Khan Academy, SpellingCity, NewsELA, Scholastic Magazine.

Math:
Log on to Pearson Realize by way of the Nye Student Portal  https://powerschool.sandi.net/public/ Parents can monitor how your child is doing and review tests.  Students can finish incomplete assignments, play games to practice math skills, and watch video mini-lessons.

Writing:
Take time to talk stories with your child about family, your histories, things that happened to you when you were young.  Have your child write down ideas in the Hot Topic section of their Writer’s Notebook.  These stories you share are great fodder for their writing.

Make something together –teach your child how to make a special family dish for Thanksgiving dinner. Take plenty of pictures of cooking and eating together and load them on your child’s hard-drive.  Have them type up their stories on google docs so we can publish these personal narratives at school.

Reading:
Encourage your child to read and have them tell you about it.  Ask questions, and discuss “What would you do in that situation?”  Read recipes.  Read the news.  Read NewsELA online ask, “What do you think about that?”

Enjoy this time together and encourage hard work, having fun, learning together.  Have a lovely week!

See you back to school on November 28th.

Calendar:
Fieldtrip to Fleet Center on December 12th
Awards on December 16th
Winter Break December 19th-January 2nd
