Permission Slips for Fieldtrip

Glad that everyone had a nice Thanksgiving.

Fieldtrip to Fleet Center
On Monday, December 12th we will have a field trip to the Ruben Space Fleet Center.  We received a grant  for the trip to watch an IMax movie about the Grand Canyon from the Ruben H. Fleet Center, and also a grant from Friends of Balboa Park for one of our buses.  This ties into our studies about water.

I will be looking for some chaperones who can help us keep and eye on the students on our trip.  If you are interested in helping, please make sure that you have your volunteer paperwork up to date in the office, and write down your telephone number and email on the permission slip so I can let you know if we can use you.  Our trip will be on Monday, December 12th, from 9:00-1:30.  Please sign the permission slip and send it back to school ASAP.

Reading
In our Shared Reading we have started a book called “One Crazy Summer,” by Rita Williams-Garcia.  This book is currently on sale for $1.00 in the Scholastic Book Club https://clubs.scholastic.com/one-crazy-summer/9780545447843-rco-us.html?productSearchTerm=one%20crazy  I urge you to go online to order the book for your child.  It is a Newberry Honor Book and has received numerous other recognitions and accolades.

Scholastic Book Club
We have a very short window to order books before we go on winter break.  I am sending home the December and Holiday catalogs, but you are able to order from any of the available catalogs online.   Please place your order by Thursday, December 1st and I will close out the order so they can send us the books before our break.  https://clubs.scholastic.com/

Math
In Pearson Realize students are working on their division skills and using partial products.  I notice some students are still having some trouble with their math facts.  Please keep practicing multiplication fact families so they can access those quickly and with accuracy.   Check your child’s homework and make sure they are doing the problems correctly.

Writer’s Workshop
Many students are working on publishing a story.  Please remind them to bring their USB drive to school so we can transfer the work to and from home.  Also remind your child to finish their illustrations, or typing in their stories online if that’s what they need to do.  Students should spend 30 minutes each evening on their Writer’s work.

Thanksgiving Week

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It was so nice to talk to everyone who came to parent conferences.  Thank you all for being interested in your child’s education and helping your child to be more successful in school.

Thanksgiving Week, November 21-25
Next week is Thanksgiving.  Students will have a whole week off from school.  Please remind your child that they can take advantage of this time to catch up on work that needs to be done, to get ahead if they are able, to practice math facts, type up their stories so we can publish.  There are so many wonderful resources for them to work and play on:  STMath, Khan Academy, SpellingCity, NewsELA, Scholastic Magazine.

Math:
Log on to Pearson Realize by way of the Nye Student Portal  https://powerschool.sandi.net/public/ Parents can monitor how your child is doing and review tests.  Students can finish incomplete assignments, play games to practice math skills, and watch video mini-lessons.

Writing:
Take time to talk stories with your child about family, your histories, things that happened to you when you were young.  Have your child write down ideas in the Hot Topic section of their Writer’s Notebook.  These stories you share are great fodder for their writing.

Make something together –teach your child how to make a special family dish for Thanksgiving dinner. Take plenty of pictures of cooking and eating together and load them on your child’s hard-drive.  Have them type up their stories on google docs so we can publish these personal narratives at school.

Reading:
Encourage your child to read and have them tell you about it.  Ask questions, and discuss “What would you do in that situation?”  Read recipes.  Read the news.  Read NewsELA online ask, “What do you think about that?”

Enjoy this time together and encourage hard work, having fun, learning together.  Have a lovely week!

See you back to school on November 28th.

Book Fair During Parent Conference Week November 14-18th

Parent Conferences
Next week we have minimum days for Parent Conference week.  (School is out at 12:00.)

You will be meeting with me if your child started in my classroom at the beginning of the year.  If your child started school this year in Ms. Nafarrete’s or Mrs. Robinson’s classroom, then you have a parent conference time scheduled with your child’s old teacher.

Please check the conference reminders that were given to your child to take home last week.  Some students still have not returned the bottom portion of the letter to let me know that parents have seen the reminder.

Book Fair
We have a Book Fair in the Library, so make sure you plan a little extra time either before our conference time or after to browse through the books.   The PTA is also looking for volunteers to help man the fair.

Pearson Math Test
Our class has taken Topic 4 assessment.  Please check your child’s scores online and review the test with them.  Some students need to work a little more on multiplication and place value of decimals.  You can help your child to be more successful by checking their work at home and going over their homework with them.

Veteran’s Day is November 11th- No School

Parent Conferences start November 14th

Parent Conferences

Next week is our Parent Conference week.  School will dismiss early at 12:00 all week.  Letters have been passed out for students to take home with the parent conference schedule.  Please make sure that you see the letter and check your time.  If something comes up, please Dojo me a message so I can make changes to the schedule.

Welcome to Our Newcomers
Our upper grade classrooms were reorganized and we have some new fifthgraders in our room  Thank you to all our families who sent a little refreshment or came in to volunteer to help for our Halloween/Dia De Los Muertos Welcome Party.  It made the day special and was such a lovely way to celebrate our new classmates joining our room.

Pearson Math
We are just finishing up topic 4 in Math.  You can help your child by reviewing their progress online on the Quick Checks.  It will show you what your child needs more practice on.  Students can go over their lesson pages and practice problems from the reteaching pages at the end of the topic in their workbooks.  We will have a math test on Wednesday.

Dia De Los Muertos

Special thanks to Ms. Sanchez, one of our moms who came in to share how her family celebrated Dia De Los Muertos.  She brought in pan de muerto for our students to all try.  It was delicious!
