Zoo Fieldtrip on Monday, May 2nd

Zoo Trip on Monday, May 2nd
On Monday we have a fieldtrip to the San Diego Zoo to learn more about our watersheds. We are suppose to be there at 9:30, so we are hoping to get the students on the bus as soon as the busses arrive around 8:50 and be on our way as soon as they can start.

Students need to bring a healthy sack lunch.  Please pack it in a bag that they can carry and won’t fall apart, as they will each be carrying their own lunch and walking around with them.

Our chaperones are now all set and arranged.  (Remember to bring a lunch for yourselves as you will not be able to leave your group to purchase food.)

According to my weather app, we should be having lovely warm weather that day.  Please make sure that your child is dress appropriate for a day outside.  Have them wear sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable shoes.  Collin’s family was so generous and gave the students red hats last Friday.  I encourage everyone to wear them on our fieldtrip!

Awards Assembly on Friday, April 29th  8:10
Congratulations to Richard, Angelika, Sam, Audrey, Zoriyah for their good work.  We will celebrate them on Friday, April 29th.  Please feel free to join us if you can.

Golden Pyramid Scholars Award Ceremony-Saturday, April 30th 8:00 am
Congratulations to our scholars who will be receiving a Golden Pyramid Scholars medal of Honor and Award Certificate at Golden Hall, at the San Diego Concourse Golden Hall on Saturday morning.   Students receiving this honor were given a letter to let their parents know.  Parents need to respond by Friday, April 29th to confirm your child’s participation (information is on the letter).

Everyone is welcomed to attend this ceremony on Saturday morning.  http://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event?oeidk=a07eccquvqs6220ddb8&llr=rnoon4tab

SBAC Testing
We started testing this week.  It is long and challenging for our students, but please encourage your child to do their best, and enjoy the process.  Remind your child to eat something in the morning.  Please make sure that they get plenty of rest and a full night’s sleep so they can be prepared to take their test.

If you are able to send some gum or peppermints for the class, we will use them during testing.

Scholastic Book Club
We’ve sent home book club catalogs this week.  If you would like to make an order, please enter your orders online by May 4th.  (If it is your first time ordering online, you will need to log on with our classroom using our classroom code GWTQW.)  I will plan to close out the order by next week, but you can let me know if you need a little more time.

Yearbook Logo Contest for 5th Graders
Get out your black pens and design a logo for Nye!  We will feature the winning design in the yearbook.  Students will need to draw a logo using black ink only.  (This black ink drawing will later be colorized using a computer program to do it.) Submit your drawing next week.

5th Grade Yearbooks

5th Grade Year Book – Order Deadline April 25th
This 5th grade year has been so exciting, full of great experiences and memories.  To celebrate these memories and events families have an opportunity to purchase a 5th Grade Yearbook commemorating our time together at Nye.  These books will be passed out the week before promotion, so students will have plenty of time for signing.  However, we will need to order the yearbook vouchers now in order to receive the special price.

The 5th Grade Yearbook is an 11 ¼ by 8 ¾ hardcover photobook.  A letter was sent home Monday.  If you are purchasing  the Yearbook(s), please send the bottom of the letter back with your payment.  If you are not planning to buy a book, it would help us greatly if you could check the bottom indicating that you have seen the letter, but are not planning to buy the photobook.

If you have some good pictures that we might be able to include in the photobook, please feel free to send me the photos in jpeg format at maximum resolution and size on a disk (sandisk, usb, or CD).  Email sometime reduces, compresses or changes the image so a disk will be best.

Thank you to those who have already sent back their orders.  Again, all yearbook orders must be received by Monday, April 25th.

Craft Night
Craft Night is Wednesday, April 27th from 6:00-7::00 in the Nye Library.  It’s a fun night out with the family.  Come join us!

Jump Rope for Heart
Students are jumping to raise money for the American Heart Association this week.

Here is a link to a video from the American Heart Association about 3 heros and how they are helping to combat heart disease.

This link will tell you more about this year’s Jump Rope For Heart program:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcjPso_mY3I&feature=youtu.be

SBAC Testing
Next week we will be taking the Smarter Balance Assessment.  These tests are given to students across our nation and give us a snapshot of how we are doing.  Students will be taking these tests online.  You can take a look at the practice test with your child at home.  Students can find the link in the Nye Website.  I encourage you and your child to take some time to use these practice tests at home (in addition to what we are working on in school) and become familiar with the online tools and formats used.  Students can practice the tests at their grade levels to see how the tests are organized and become more comfortable with the formats.

Dr Zoolittle

On Monday, we had a fun assembly about the Watershed in preparation for our trip to the Zoo on May 2nd. Then Dr. Zoolittle came by on Wednesday to do a great activity in the classroom.  Students had to be detectives to examine some guts and figure out what animal had eaten them, and then what the animal died of.  We also got to see and touch some live animals.

This program about Watershed Heroes has been wonderful and we are looking forward to our fieldtrip on May 2nd.  We are also looking for a few parents to join us as chaperones that day.  If you are able and would like to be one of our chaperones, please contact me through ClassDojo.  The bus will be leaving school at 9:00 that morning.  Students (and chaperones)will need a sack lunch and should wear a hat and sunscreen, and comfortable shoes for walking.

Thank you Ms. Keisha!

We have been fortunate to have Ms. Keisha as an aide this last month.  She has made a big impact in our class and we love her.  We are sorry that Friday, April 22nd will be her last day at Nye.  We wish her well in her new job placement.

Thank you BizTown Volunteers!

Thank you, BizTown Volunteers!  We couldn’t have done it without you!

On Thursday, April 14th, our 5th Grade Team went to BizTown.  It was a fantastic fieldtrip!  Students have been learning about business and how our economy works for the last month.  They had many lessons in class preparing them for this fieldtrip.

When they finally arrived, our students were in awe.  Parent volunteers arrived early in the morning for training and were ready for our kids when they walked in.

It was a very busy day as students worked their businesses and participated in the community economy.  They worked as producers and consumers.

It was a wonderful and memorable day!

BizTown Tomorrow!

Businesses Plan for BizTown
Our fieldtrip is on Thursday, April 14th.  Please remember to bring a sack lunch with your name and business clearly labeled.  Dress appropriately for your job.  Do not bring a backpack to school.   Remember that we will be returning at 2:30 pm.

Growth Mindset
As you may have heard and seen on ClassDojo, we have been talking about growth mindset and how we can become better learners in our class.  There has been a lot of research on this.  Here is a video link about how our brain grows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtKJrB5rOKs

Watch these at home with your child and discuss them, so they can make smart choices when they approach new or challenging things.

Nye Goes to Biztown! April 14th

Richard for Mayor

Biztown Mayor Elected
Congratulations to our new mayor of Biztown.  Candidates from each of the 5th grade classrooms gave their speech before our runoff election.  All three candidates were very impressive and it was a close race.  But the winner and new mayor of Biztown was non-other than our own Richard.  Good job! We look to your leadership in running a smooth town at Biztown.

A Note from our New Mayor:
Please give Ms. Rakeisha a shout out on the newsletter:
Ms. Rakeisha helped me be more confident in making speeches and prepared me to be more confident in front of  my peers.  Also she made me the cover of my own magazine that made me feel successful, so I want to thank her.  Because of what she did for me I want to let her know that I love my picture and thank her for making me a better mayor.

This is my first job as mayor so I want to make sure that my peers know that I am working for them.  Thank you for helping me with my first duty as the mayor.

Biztown Fieldtrip on Thursday, April 14th
Students have been meeting with their business teams to come up with their business and accounting plans this week.   We are very busy and working hard in finishing up our last few activities in preparation for our BizTown fieldtrip on Thursday, April 14th.

Students have taken home their visit reminder letter and parent volunteer maps.  If you are volunteering on Thursday, please look for both letters.  Parent volunteers are expected to be there at 8:00 am for training.  We will meet you there.  Remember to bring a lunch for yourselves.  At the end of the day you will be able to pick up your child and leave from BizTown rather than follow the bus back to school.  (We may need you to sign out your child–we’ll check on that.)

Student should not bring their backpacks on Thursday, as we will not be using them, and will not be coming back to the classroom to pick them up.  Please make sure that your child has a sacklunch labeled with their name and business clearly written on the outside of the bag.  Please note that sudents will be getting back to school ~2:30 on Thursday.  Make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for your their JA BizTown business position, and wearing comfortable shoes-as they will be on their feet most of  the day.

Watershed Heroes Zoo Fieldtrip
Students have taken home a fieldtrip permission slip for a Zoo trip on Monday, May 2nd.  Please make sure that you have checked in with your child to sign and send back the permission slip.  ( I think we are missing 5 slips.)

GATE Testing
5th graders and students new to our district will be taking a GATE test next Friday.  Students need to return the green permission slip before they can participate.  Please make sure that you get the paperwork returned ASAP if you would like your child to be included.

We have been studying our body systems in class.  Students have an “alimentary canal” to finish coloring by Monday.  Remind your child to finish it if they still have coloring to complete and to bring it back to school on Monday.

Google Docs
This week students signed into their Google Drives and learned about using Google Docs.  I’m so excited that our class has access to this wonderful resource.  Students can work on projects and share their work with their teachers and other students to work collaboratively.  Ask them to show you what they can do.

Remind your child to type in their stories or transfer their writing to Google Docs so they can access these anywhere they have the internet.
