Back to School Night -September 24th, 6:00-7:00

This week students had an introduction to the music program.  They were given a form to apply for their choice of band, orchestra, or choir.  There were many forms to fill out for the various programs we have at Nye.  Some, such as the Enrollment form, the LCFF, Universal form, and Computer Lab Permissions are very important for your child to bring back to school.  If you still have some of those forms at home, please make sure that you fill them out and send them back as soon as possible.

This week students are working on place value in math.  You can help your child by helping them memorize their multiplication tables and practice their multiplication facts for accuracy and quickness.  5th graders are expanding their learning by multiplying by 10s, 100s, 1000s and exploring exponents.  Please send in a deck of playing cards that we can use for math practice games.  If you have extra decks, we would greatly appreciate your donation for another student who is unable to bring a deck in.

Please review your child’s homework and planners.

Working Online
Students now have access to their PearsonSuccess accounts where they can watch the lesson videos, take the quiz and also see the online mathbook.  If you are having trouble with the site at home, there is some tech support : Phone: 1-800-234-5832 (Monday thru Friday 8am to 8pm EST).  Sometimes it might require that you turn off your pop-up blocker if you have it on.Students are encouraged to use the resources to study math concepts and practice skills.

This week we also got everybody up and running on Sumdog  which also provides some fun math games that your child can access online.

For reading and social studies, our students have signed up to use NEWSELA.  This site has current news articles for students to read.  It is a wonderful site in that each article can be adapted to your child’s reading level.  The articles are leveled and your child should be able to show you how they can choose an appropriate Lexile.  There is also a quiz that students can take after they have read an article.

Sign up for Class Dojo if you have not yet done so.  A letter was sent last week with the password and instructions.  This is an easy way for you to get a quick glimsp of how your child is doing in class.  Today, the site came up with an “Overload” message, so I was not able to go on, but generally I expect the site to be up and running.

Guided/Shared Reading
We are having a wonderful time reading Roald Dahl’s, The Witches.  It is such a fun book and our class in enjoying it tremendously.  Your child might enjoy spending some time to explore some online resources celebrating Dahl and his work  There are also some free online versions of this book and clips from the movie that was made of this story.

Students will be working on a unit about our watery planet Earth.  We have started learning about the Solar System.
